A church is meant to inspire, to strengthen faith in the divine, to give hope in something bigger than oneself. When visiting new cities, I usually seek out churches. For me these visits can have a deep somber, meditative experience, providing often an overwhelming sense of awe.

The extraordinary power of these sacred and serene elemental spaces is usually assisted by the church’s design particularly involving the structure of the ceilings.

A ceiling is more than a functional engineering solution. The word ceiling traces its roots from the Latin word caelum, which means heaven or sky. In church architecture, the ceiling is an integral part of one's expression of worship. Maybe it’s because the ceiling is where believers look to when praying to the heavens. No matter what the reason, ceilings offer some of the most dramatically beautiful designs in all of church architecture, provoking collective spirituality.
