Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom) is located in Budapest, Hungary. It is unlike many of the typical Roman Catholic churches dating back to the Middle Ages.

• The church was used as a coronation church by Hungarian kings for centuries.

• It was the scene of several royal weddings.

• It was also made into a mosque for over 200 years by the Ottoman Turks.

• During World War II, was used as a camp by the Germans, then by the Soviets.

• Once under the care by the Franciscans, then by the Jesuits.

• Built in 1015… Destroyed in 1241… Re-built in the 14th Century… Whitewashed and stripped out during the Turk occupation… Extensively restored in the 19th Century… Badly damaged in WW II… Started re-construction during the 1950s… And continues to be under thorough renovation.

The church was also known as a location of a "Mary-wonder." In 1686 during the siege of Buda by the Christians, a wall of the church collapsed due to cannon fire. It turned out that an old Madonna statue was hidden behind the wall. As the sculpture of the Virgin Mary appeared before the Turks, the morale of the soldiers collapsed and the city fell on the same day.
