Custer, South Dakota is a small town located in the heart of South Dakota's Black Hills. It is named after Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, whose 7th Cavalry regiment encamped in this area in 1874. While the soldiers were here, gold was discovered in the Black Hills, and that sparked the 1876 gold rush. Linda and I spent part of our honeymoon here, way back in '71.

This photo depicts a typically strange scene prevalent in small towns throughout the American West. About twenty years ago, Custer acquired about two dozen of these (unpainted) buffaloes (construction materials unknown), and placed them along Custer's Main Street (Mt. Rushmore Road). Then the painters came and applied their skills. This particular buffalo features the granite spires and outcroppings that populate the Black Hills, and the mountain goats that live on them..

The youngsters love these buffaloes, and I had to shoo away a bunch of them to get this shot.

Custer is a great place to stay, if you are in the Black Hills. Custer State Park, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, the Badlands, etc. Highly recommended!

As always, thanks for stopping by!
