This collage is composed of photos taken at the Hemingway House in Key West. The great American author lived here for eight years prior to World War II, and wrote or finished some of his best novels here (for example, "A Farewell to Arms").

The Nation has never lost interest in Ernest Hemingway. He lived life large, and today such a lifestyle would undoubtedly be condemned. The drinking, the carousing, the big game hunting, the poor parenting -- there is much about Hemingway not to like.

Still, he was a man of enormous talent, and he maintains his grip on the American imagination. His is, ultimately, an unhappy story, and if you would like to know more, there is a good Wiki article.

Hemingway's House is deservedly the #1 tourist attraction in Key West. Many come to see the cats -- there are 59 at present -- more than half of whom have six toes on at least one paw. Five of the cats have six toes on all four paws. The cat you see here has six toes on her front paws.

The House is built on Key West's highest ground: 12 feet. The House is also built on Key West's largest building lot: 2 acres. Key West is Florida's most expensive real estate, and the value of Papa Hemingway's House is priceless.

Of further interest is the in-ground swimming pool, an engineering feat in light of the Key West's high water table. Today, it would cost more than a half-million dollars to construct. Key West's lone lighthouse is located just across the street. It is Key West's highest point.

Key West is an expensive destination except in late summer and early fall, when prices plummet. Despite its wild reputation, it is family friendly. Highly recommended!

As always, thanks for stopping by.

Thank you Heather for the spotlight!

As you travel those Islands in the Stream it's good to know The Sun Also Rises in Key West...a place some might consider The Garden of Eden...perhaps if you listen real hard at the Hemingway House you might even hear The Old Man and the Sea...If there is a church there you might even guess For Whom the Bell Tolls...

Thank you, everyone. Good observations, John. Our docent told us he wrote or published eight different major works during the eight years he was at Key West. From there, Hemingway moved on to Cuba (with a new wife), where he took his stand for 20 years.
