What city do you live in? What neighborhood?

Hilo - Panaewa

What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?

Ethnic, spiritual, hip, funky, rural, small, stuck in time, rainy, safe, scenic, historic, cultural, agricultural, tropical and real.

How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?

I have officially lived in town one year but in reality have visited for extended periods since 1985. My wife is from here and both my sons attend a wonderful school here. The school was founded by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop for children of Hawaiian ancestry. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernice_Pauahi_Bishop

What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?

Most favorite are the mana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mana) and the people. They are so inclusive and accepting I am family here. Least favorite. The humidity it can get to you or more to the point anything electronic, cameras included. Dehumidifiers help a lot.

Do you feel that you belong there?

What is the most common misconception about where you live?

It rains all the time, not! The Hawaiians call it a blessing and when you adopt that mentality it really is a blessing. Most of the time I don't mind getting rained on it conveys a primitive sense of life. Back to a time when humans didn't fret getting wet.

What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?

It's where the Merrie Monarch festival is held. The superbowl of Hula competitions. It has been hit several times by tsunamis aka tidal waves. The good news is that we are prepared. It has da absolute bes mochi (rice candy), poke (prepared tuna) and poi (taro)!

What aspect of your city do you secretly love?

As the Hawaiians would say "da grindz" aka the food is amazing! Give me some Opi'i and poi and I am happy.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Forget Oahu come and visit the real Hawai'i here on da Big Island, there is so much more to see!
