Urban street art sightings

Street painting in Florence Italy

ONE OF MY HOBBIES IS PAINTING/SKETCHING which I normally do it when I'm a little depressed or when I need to divert my attention from my daily routine to something else for relaxation. I did try different media but most of the time I play with my Japanese pen and drawing pads.

The reason behind this hobby is because of my great fascination with paintings on prints or displayed in museums or art galleries. This hobby also inspired me to visit Florence (Italy) last year where some of the best paintings and art works in different media could be found!

During the city tour, I was caught by surprise to see painters on the streets. Aside from displaying their finished drawings/paintings, you can also witness on how they do it. Some of these artists could be found in front of the Galleria degli Uffizi. Uffizi has the finest picture gallery of prominent paintings of Leonardo, Perugino, Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo and many more.

As you go along towards the busiest bridge (with shops) between the north and south of Arno River which is called Ponte Vecchio, another group of artists displaying their unique talents to the public. Instead of having pads and pens on their hands, they used the street as their drawing board and colourful chalks!

I asked one of them on the duration to complete a portrait. He responded that it will take the whole day to finish one and depends on the details of the subject to be drawn. A follow-up question for him is the motivation to do it in public. He replied with a smile on his face..."to earn extra cash from people who appreciated of what we are doing..." There is a small can beside the unfinished portrait for people to drop their coins of "admiration". It is indeed a fascinating scene for this incredible talent.

On the other hand, I don't know what will happen when the rain drops by surprise. By the way, after 3 hours I went back to check the outcome of these street paintings. They are still on progress, nearly finished! Well, maybe encourage me to come back again on that day to drop my coin of appreciation...not on the following day because it will be another set of portraits.
