Photo Essay

A rainy afternoon in Hermann Park in Houston, Texas

Hermann Park - Flags to the entrance of the zoo parking lot

The other day I had an appointment in the area of Hermann Park. I would have two and a half hours free before I was to meet my husband, daughter and a friend for our evening meal, then my daughter and I would go on to our art class. Since I did not want to drive home between my appointment and meeting up for the meal and art class, I had decided early on to take my camera gear and go to the park to take photos. The day arrived and so did the rain. We need the rain so I wasn't complaining. I had hoped it would quit before I got to the park but it did not slow down at all. So I decided to learn some things about my camera, experiment with settings and take all of my photos through the windows of my van - make a game and a challenge out of getting good photos : ). It was fun. The park had very few cars in it so I could drive where I wanted to without anyone needing to get around me. I could point my van towards what I wanted to photograph and time my shots to be taken between the windshield wipers as they passed back and forth. I was amazed at how much I found, things that you would see at the park but maybe not focus on, they were just part of the landscape which makes the park very attractive. I saw things that I had not noticed before and now I had the time and the luxury to study them closer and take photos of them, all from inside of my van. A few times the rain quit and I was tempted to get out and photograph something that I saw, that I could not get close enough to with the van, but I didn't want to spoil my "game". The time flew by. I could have taken many more photos but I needed to get going.

There will be many more days in that park and lots more photo opportunities. I have been going to this park for 43 years and have seen it grow with many improvements, too many to mention. If you want to see more info on what is in this park go to the following web site.

This is a great essay Ann! Your photos are wonderful. It is great that you had the park to yourself and had so much fun experimenting. A great way to learn just what your camera can do.

Excellent essay..I plan to look at your pictures as soon as possible..Shooting pictures between the windshield wipers as it is raining is a challenge as I have tried that too as a passenger when my husband was driving..My vote!
