Top Ten Reasons to go on Photo Walks.

I've gone on several Photo Walks and usually come away with a few decent photos as well as ....

1. Bonding

You get a chance to share time with those with like interest.

2. An Increase in Boldness

A lot of us are apprehensive when it comes to approaching subjects for photos for fear of rejection or a confrontation and you end up either using a long lens so you don't have to interact or try to sneak a shot when they're not looking. With a group, you become more comfortable approaching strangers to get their photo. (Question: "Who are all of you guys with cameras? Answer: We're just hobbyist walking around looking for some unique shots. You have a interesting face.. I like your eyes.. would you mind if I take your portrait? Send me an email an I'll send you a copy).

3. Education

You learn from others in the group (Seeing details and perspectives you may otherwise miss) along with different techniques.

4. Time to make the shots you want

You can spend time at a single place waiting for the right moment without someone rushing you to move on (wife, boyfriend, brother, etc. :)).

5. Access to Models

Often times models show up and you can get some shots for your portfolio and maybe contact them for future work.

6. Try different types of photography

You may shoot landscapes and try portraits or street photography and try macro shots.

7. Social Network Expansion

Sharing your work with others after the walk allows for critique and input.

8. Exercise

You walk around and that's good for you (wear comfortable shoes, don't carry too much gear, drink water, and wear sunscreen if you are going to be in the summer sun...bundle up in the winter).

9. Safety

There is safety in numbers ... make sure you have a "buddy" if you are going to be separated from the group.

10. Exposure to Diversity

All types of skill levels, and folks from different ethnic and social economic backgrounds come together to take photos.

When living in Korea, I went on daily photo walks with other photographers from our photo club. Of the many things I miss about Korea, those daily walks are number one!
