My Favourite Stays for the Archive Walk: Victoria Gardens, Perth

Alexis's favourite places to stay in Perth for the archive walk - five warm addresses between Victoria Gardens, Kings Park and the Swan River.

I spent years closing a hotel's books at 3am - night audits teach you which places actually run, and I trust that instinct more than any star rating. Perth won me over the same way a good front desk does: quietly, and on its own terms. This is my little black book for the archive walk around Victoria Gardens - the vantage points I'd stake a photograph on, the seasons worth timing, and the five addresses where I'd sleep inside the old frame. I've kept it personal on purpose. These are my favourites, not an index.

What the old photographs saw here

The archive walk is simple in theory: carry an old photograph, stand where the photographer stood, and let the decades do the talking. Around Victoria Gardens the ingredients are all there - parkland, the river edge, a skyline that keeps rearranging itself. My timing rule comes straight from the audit desk: travel the calm weeks either side of the peak, when the crowds thin and the rates ease. I give a district three slow walks before I raise the camera - once for the eyes, once for the feet, once for the frame.

The vantage that still exists

Kings Park is the vantage that refuses to go out of date - gardens, skyline and river arranged in one frame, just as the older shots set them. Time it right and the park stages its own evenings: Moortabiny, a drone and sound show, lit the park across 2-4 October 2026, and October into November is my favourite window here. Then go say goodnight to the city from a balcony instead of a lookout.

Mountway Holiday Apartments - a private balcony with city views, sitting between Kings Park and the city centre, five minutes' walk from one and 15 from the Swan River; exactly where an archive walker wants to wake up! For where to stay in Perth, this is my first note.

The vantage that's gone, and its replacement

Every archive walk needs its vanished shot, and here it's the old working shoreline that Elizabeth Quay has redrawn. The quay is the replacement frame, and the city approves: on New Year's Eve it runs a double firework display over the water, at 8.30pm and again at midnight. I photograph the quay last, when the new buildings and the old river settle into one picture - the modern layer is part of the comparison, not a betrayal of it.

Then-and-now: making the comparison frame honest

An honest then-and-now is same spot, same hour, same lens - and it helps to let someone local correct your route. Two Feet & a Heartbeat has run Perth walking tours since 2007, and Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours tells the deeper story of the ground you're standing on; I book both and take notes. Two rules from my night-audit years: ask the desk before you promise yourself anything, and never trust a first walk. If you're still assembling the wider trip, the full Perth hotels & apartments line-up is worth a browse.

Sleeping inside the old frame

Some nights you want to sleep inside the frame itself. The Melbourne Hotel keeps the 1897 bones: heritage rooms with high ceilings and old-world charm, contemporary rooms behind them, and the rooftop bar Aurora for the view that covers both centuries. It stands 0.35 km from His Majesty's Theatre and RAC Arena, with the free Redcat bus stop at the door - which makes a January trip almost too easy, with the United Cup running at RAC Arena from 1-10 January 2027. Book early; tennis weeks fill the frame fast.

The pairings worth printing

Some frames you build the trip around. Australia Day turns Langley Park into the city's fireworks and drone-show lawn - nearly 120,000 people gathered there in 2026 - and few rooms get to watch it unfold like the ones above the park and the river. If quiet is more your season, February brings Perth Festival back to the city, 5-28 February 2027, and the summer fills fast on either side of it. Pick your frame first, then find the bed that faces it.

Residence On Langley Park - it overlooks the Swan River and Langley Park itself, so the Australia Day fireworks go off over that very lawn; add the heated pool, sauna and Origin by Olio's and I'm sold! Find it on the map ↗.

The seasons that fill the frame

Then there's the comedy and music side of the calendar, which I've come to love as a recovering night owl: Morgan Jay brings The Goofy Guy Tour to Perth HPC in Mt Claremont on 6 November 2026, and comedians like David Nihill and Lucas Zelnick keep the laughs moving through the season. Fringe World spills across the city from 20 January to 14 February 2027 - and mind the no-flash photography policy at Perth HPC, of all places a photographer should respect. My one hard habit: book the show first, then the bed with a 24-hour front desk for the late return.

Take the walk, find your own frames

That's my little black book for the archive walk around Victoria Gardens - five addresses, a handful of vantage points, and a calendar that decides the timing. One last habit from the desk: ask the 24-hour front desk what checkout runs to when you book, because the 2am answer tells you how a place really runs. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking. Now go wander - the gardens, the quay, the park lawns. And when your archive walk grows past this corner, the wider Perth hotels & apartments collections are where I'd look next.
