My Favourite British Columbia Resorts, Caught at Work
A former night auditor's quiet tour of British Columbia's lakeside, mountain and hot-springs resorts, caught in their early working hours.
Who's Up Before You Are
Guests used to ask me at 2am who actually keeps a resort running, and my answer was always 'not the people you see at check-in.' It's the marina hands, the line cooks, the lift crews, up long before the lobby stirs. If you want a photograph of any of it, ask the front desk first and confirm who's comfortable being in frame - never assume a work uniform is an invitation.By the Water, Before Breakfast
Two of my favourites sit right on the water, where the working day starts at the dock.-
Photos
8.0Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa - the powerboat marina and the historic Copper Room's kitchen both seem to be running long before the mineral pool opens; ask the front desk which hours suit a quiet photo of the dock ->

9.0Painted Boat Resort Spa And Marina - the spa therapists and the seasonal Lagoon kitchen keep pace with the marina, and dinner reservations are required, which says plenty about how busy that harbour kitchen gets by evening.
On the Hill Before the Lifts Turn
Ski country runs on an earlier clock than most guests realise.-
Photos
9.0Lizard Creek Lodge - ski-in/ski-out access means the lift crews and the ski-rental desk are working before Cirque even opens for the day; check current details since the restaurant's hours shift with the season.
Three Kitchens at the Edge of Yoho
Emerald Lake Lodge runs three separate kitchens inside Yoho National Park, which is a lot of early prep for one address.-
Photos
8.5Emerald Lake Lodge - between the Mount Burgess Dining Room, the Kicking Horse Lounge and the seasonal Cilantro on the Lake, there's a kitchen crew going somewhere on this property most of the day (reviews here), while the cabin-style rooms keep guests politely out of the way.
The Green Crews and the Golf Carts
Golf greens don't mow themselves before a morning tee time.-
Photos
8.2Copper Point Resort - the Elements Grill watches the golf course crew through its own windows, and opening hours change with the season, so confirm before planning a sunrise breakfast around the greens ↗
Shuttle Hands and Coffee-Bar Mornings
Airport-adjacent resorts run on a different rhythm entirely - theirs never really stops.-
Photos
8.3Radisson Blu Vancouver Airport Hotel & Marina - the 24-hour shuttle drivers and the lobby coffee bar staff are the crews most guests actually meet, alongside a 158-slip marina crew almost nobody notices ->
Springs Before Sunrise
And one to close on, where the working hours and the soaking hours quietly overlap.-
Photos
7.7Fairmont Hot Springs Resort - the hot-spring bath attendants and the kitchen serving brunch and cocktails are both working before most guests find the sauna; it's one of my favourite hot springs resorts in British Columbia, so confirm pool hours at the desk and wander off to find your own corner of it.
