My Favourite Family Stays in Halls Gap
A warm, personal retake on Halls Gap: lookouts, waterfalls, a wine weekend and four family-friendly cottages, villas and holiday units I'd happily book.
Some places get under your skin the first time and then quietly ask you to come back and do it properly.
Halls Gap is one of those for me. This is my little black book for the second go: the lookouts, the waterfalls, the wine weekend, the wildlife and four family bases I'd happily book.
The frame that failed and why
Years on a hotel night desk taught me how trips go wrong. The first attempt almost always fails on over-ambition, not on the place.
The Pinnacle - the Grampians' most iconic lookout, with sweeping views over Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield, and worth every step!
Reeds Lookout - the start of the easy one-hour return walk to The Balconies, two rock ledges overhanging the Victoria Valley, my favourite small-legs outing.
Boroka Lookout - accessible to all ages and abilities, and pram friendly, so nobody gets left behind.
What the first attempt got wrong about this place
It treated the whole park as one afternoon. Waterfalls need their own plan.
MacKenzie Falls - one of Victoria's largest and most consistent waterfalls, about 30 minutes' drive from Halls Gap, but one family guide notes construction closing the precinct through the second half of 2026, so check before you build a day around it.
Silverband Falls - an easy 700m walk from the car park that runs best after rain, a sweet little win for small walkers!

8.9Grampians View Cottages And Units - my pick if you want a tennis court, heated indoor pool and free bike rental on 5 acres, three minutes' drive from the town centre, though you give up staying right in the middle of things (hotels in Halls Gap).
The corrected position and hour
The retake is about where you stand and when. Go to Boroka at sunrise or sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.
Boroka Lookout - 180-degree views over Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield, with picnic tables and toilets, a morning I'd repeat!
The Pinnacle from Sundial Carpark - around 4km return, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, with no permits or bookings required.
Split the morning - hikers take the Pinnacle while everyone else enjoys Reeds or Boroka, so no one grumbles.

8.6Halls Haven Holiday Units - the family base with 50 acres, 2 pools, a playground and a recreation room with table-tennis, a five-minute drive from the Zoo and the park, so you trade a short drive to town for space (Tripadvisor); the morning animal feeding is a delight, but confirm it when you book.
The variables that can still ruin it
Weather and crowds are the two things a plan can't control.
Grampians Grape Escape - held at Halls Gap over the first weekend of May every year, and accommodation ran at or near capacity for the 2026 edition, so book early.
Roads and tracks - Mount William Road is closed to vehicles until further notice, and crossing the river at MacKenzie Falls has been prohibited since 2024.
After midnight, guests asked me one thing: what if it rains? Plan a wet-day backup and browse Halls Gap accommodation early.
Basing for the second attempt: the town
The town itself is half the charm. Kangaroos regularly graze on the oval and golf course.
Brambuk, the National Park and Cultural Centre - dedicated to Koori culture through exhibitions, tours and live performances, my rainy-day favourite!
Halls Gap Zoo - over 130 species, from kangaroos and koalas to dingoes, an easy win with kids.

8.2Discovery Parks - Halls Gap - the pick for staying in the heart of town, with mountain-view villas, a children's playground and the chance of spotting kangaroos, though you lose the big private grounds of the out-of-town options (Booking.com).
Basing for the second attempt: the lake
If the plan is slow mornings, paddling and wine, go quieter.
Grampians Adventure Golf - a cheerful rainy-afternoon wildcard for families!
Canoeing - tours let you enjoy the scenery and the birds and wildlife from the lake, a gentle change from hiking.

9.4Grampians Getaway - my pick for pyramid-shaped villas around a private lake, with free canoes, a playground and resident chickens, ducks and geese, five minutes from Halls Gap, though you give up the town on your doorstep (family villas).
The retake, judged honestly
So, did the second attempt fix the frame? With a split morning, one early lookout and a base that fits the family, yes.
My favourite with small children is Halls Haven for its space. For a short weekend I'd choose the town.
Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking. Ask the property's front desk about anything you're counting on. Then wander the town and the Victoria hotels and apartments pages and find your own favourites!
