A Guide to Family Stays Near the Shrine of Remembrance
My warm, personal guide to family-friendly stays near the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne - when to visit, what's on each season, and where your crew should rest.
Where the river meets remembrance
The Shrine of Remembrance is free to enter, open daily from 10am to 5pm, and closes only on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Free guided tours leave on the hour from 10am to 4pm, except at 1pm - book ahead or at the desk on the day. My favourite ritual is the Last Post Service, every Sunday at 4:45pm on the northern forecourt: bugles, bagpipes, a lowered flag. Inside, personal photographs are welcome in public areas, but keep to handheld cameras on the monument itself - a gentle permission rule worth honouring. At the garden gates
The Royal Botanic Gardens sit free and open at the Shrine's shoulder, 7:30am to 7:30pm from October to March. The Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden - water play, bamboo tunnels - opens Wednesday to Sunday and closes each winter for a rest. In spring and summer you can punt on the Ornamental Lake, and the Aboriginal Heritage Walk, led by First Peoples guides, is the one tour I press on every family. Book it - a must!-

9.3United Places Hotel Botanic Gardens - my heart's pick: a five-star boutique hotel with family rooms, free bicycles and a terrace, practically at the garden gates, so the kids beat the crowds to the Children's Garden. boutique hotel ↗
Summer nights under the stars
From late November the gardens themselves start to sing: Live at the Gardens runs on Observatory Lawn from 20 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, with Cat Power on 3 December and Wolf Alice on 5 December - licensed all ages, picnic rugs welcome in the set-aside spot. A short walk north, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl stages Jack Johnson's all-ages Surfilmusic evening on 17 November 2026, then Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve. Summer, unmistakably, is when to come.

8.5The Olsen Melbourne Art Series - studio suites and family rooms dressed in John Olsen's landscapes, with a heated glass-bottom pool on Level 1. In my night-audit years, the question guests asked after midnight most was whether the pool would be warm for the kids' first swim - put it to the front desk when booking! family hotels in South Yarra
Chapel Street mornings
Between Shrine and bay sits South Yarra. Chapel Street runs the fashion gauntlet; Como House, an 1847 mansion, opens its gardens most days and the house itself for guided tours on set days - check ahead. Prahran Market, trading since the 1860s, is the food-lovers' morning, though it closes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Do mornings here, the gardens at lunch, the bay by late afternoon.-

Down at the bay
Catch a tram south and the day turns salty. St Kilda's pier runs out to a breakwater where little penguins come ashore at dusk - viewing is by free ticketed session only, released online on Tuesdays from 10am for the week ahead, no flash, boardwalk only. The permission etiquette here is simple: observe, don't touch. Luna Park opens on selected days, and Monarch Cakes has been baking on Acland Street since 1934 - the old-school cake shops are to die for!-

7.5Crest On Barkly Hotel - family rooms, secure undercover parking and a tour desk that arranges Yarra Valley and Great Ocean Road days, a six-minute walk from the tram stop and 1.5 km from St Kilda Beach. Ask the tour desk what's running before you book. family rooms ↗
The calendar, kindly
Mark the calendar before you book. Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2026, is a public holiday and the city fills. Anzac Day's Dawn Service at the Shrine is recommended for children ten and over - arrive long before sunrise, warmly dressed. The free NGV Triennial runs 13 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. My own soft spot is autumn: settled skies, gold elms, quieter rates.-
