A Family Retake at Hillarys Boat Harbour
I'd plan a calmer family return to Hillarys Boat Harbour: AQWA, the Sorrento Quay boardwalk, a Rottnest ferry outing and nearby family stays.
I have a soft spot for coastal days that leave room to change the plan. Around Hillarys Boat Harbour, I'd build this family retake around one good anchor, then let the rest of the day unfold.
A better frame for the harbour
My reshoot rule is simple: don't try to squeeze every possible stop into one frame. Start with Hillarys Boat Harbour itself, where AQWA, Sorrento Quay's shops and restaurants, and a sheltered swimming beach give families a few different ways to shape the day.
When I worked hotel night audit, guests often asked whether an overpacked outing could still be salvaged. I learned to choose one reliable centrepiece and keep a nearby alternative in reserve; here, the harbour makes that an easy plan.
AQWA, the family-sized centrepiece
AQWA is my favourite anchor for a family day here: its route explores native Western Australian marine life across four coastal zones, from the Great Southern to the Coral and Northern Coast. The Shipwreck Coast aquarium has a moving walkway through its underwater tunnel, while the Touch Pool and outdoor Turtle Rescue Centre add variety for younger visitors.
Daily Ocean Guide talks, feeds and interactions are included with entry; the glass-bottom boat and behind-the-scenes experiences cost extra. AQWA opens at 9am, with closing times varying by season.
Family bases for the aquarium day
For this version of the outing, I'd choose a base for the particular family rhythm: beach time, a proper meal, or a room with space to reset between stops.

A second stop without overfilling the day
After AQWA, I'd keep the next move close: stroll Sorrento Quay Boardwalk, browse its shops or restaurants, or take a breather at the harbour's sheltered swimming beach. For a bigger family outing, Rottnest Fast Ferries departs from Hillarys for a crossing of about 45 minutes; the island's bikes and buses make it possible to explore without bringing a car.
That is the retake I'd actually make: one main attraction, one easy harbour stop, and the ferry as a separate full-day plan rather than an extra squeezed into the same visit.
Room for a practical reset
If your family's version of a good return needs more room to spread out, I'd look north toward Joondalup or inland to Innaloo. These stays are farther from the harbour, but their apartment-style details can suit a trip built around several outings.

The retake, judged honestly
I'd give the harbour its own unhurried visit and let AQWA carry the main frame. Add the boardwalk if the family still has energy; save Rottnest for a day when the ferry journey is the point, not another box to tick. That's my kind of second attempt: a little less ambition, a better plan, and space to find your own favourites.
