My Favourite Central Stays Near Barracks Arch, Perth
A second chance at Perth: Alexis Herrera's five central stays near Barracks Arch, timed for comedy nights at The Rechabite and arena shows at Perth HPC.
I fell for Perth on my second attempt, which is saying something. The first time, I got the base and the timing wrong, and I flew home with the whole trip out of focus. So this little guide is my reshoot: the corrected plan, built around Barracks Arch, with the five central stays I would choose now. Come wander with me.
The frame that failed
My first Perth stay taught me the lesson I now hand to everyone: I booked a room near the airport end of town without asking the front desk a single question. Evenings vanished on trains back from Northbridge, and a 3am arrival met a desk that clearly did not want to be awake.
In my night-auditor years I learned that a hotel's true character shows after midnight - and mine never showed up at all. The reshoot starts with position and hour, not the bed.
The corrected position and hour
The Arch stands at the top of St Georges Terrace, opposite Perth railway station - a position I under-rated the first time. From it, the Art Gallery of WA and the State Library are a short stroll into the Perth Cultural Centre, Kings Park waits just up the hill, and free CAT buses loop the whole centre. Timing corrected: arrive in the afternoon, check in, then walk Hay Street's malls before dinner. Scouting the wider city? The Perth hotels and apartments listings helped me compare before I chose.

Britannia On William - my corrected pick for the galleries, a two-minute walk from the State Library and the Art Gallery of WA and the same from Perth Station. Dorms or private rooms, a guest lounge, barbecue facilities and a communal kitchen, all a few minutes' walk from the Arch. Ask the front desk at booking about check-in and checkout times - the one question I never skip. My favourite of the central stays: where to stay near Barracks Arch
Late nights at The Rechabite
Here is the frame I got wrong first time: Perth's comedy nights. The Rechabite at 224 William Street is an easy walk from the Arch, and November is generous. David Nihill brings Taking Tangents there on 11 November 2026, doors 7pm, strictly 18-plus; Lucas Zelnick follows on 16 November, doors 6.30pm. Both are ticketed and both sell fast - I book the show before I book the bed. A must!

The Emperors Crown Hostel - my pick for show nights, 500 m from Perth Railway Station and five minutes' walk from the city centre. Two outdoor courtyards, a barbecue area and a communal kitchen for the pre-show noodles, air-conditioned rooms throughout, and the free Blue Cat bus stop and WA Museum nearby. Ask the desk about late checkout before a late show - then book through Booking.com.
The big stage out at Mt Claremont
For the arena nights, the corrected destination is Perth HPC on Stephenson Avenue, Mt Claremont. Morgan Jay's Goofy Guy Tour lands on Friday 6 November 2026, doors 5.30pm for a 6.30pm start; Two Door Cinema Club mark fifteen years of Tourist History there on Sunday 15 November, doors 6.45pm, with The Vaccines as guests - all ages welcome. House rules: no flash photography, and event-day parking costs $10 a car, so I take the train and walk.

7.8Hostel G Perth - my base for those nights: right in the city centre, 11 km from the airport, with a bar, a lounge, a games room and a genuine 24-hour front desk. Breakfast with warm dishes daily, bicycle parking, staff who speak six languages. The question guests always asked me at the desk after midnight was simply 'will anyone answer?' - here, someone will. See its official site.
The variables that can still ruin it
Honesty time: three variables can still ruin the retake. Heat - Perth summers climb hard, so I schedule indoor mornings and save the water for the afternoon. Transport - the last regular trains leave the city around midnight, so I check timetables before committing to a late show. And booking windows - big comedy and music nights fill fast, so I confirm dates with the venue, then with the desk. Plan the moment, not just the bed.

7.6Billabong Backpackers Resort - my antidote to the heat: an outdoor swimming pool among manicured gardens, free breakfast daily, a billiards table and a library lounge, in Perth's CBD an 8-minute walk from NIB Stadium for its matches and concerts. Ask the front desk about the A$30 refundable key deposit before arrival - I like my surprises at the desk, not in my wallet. My pick as a backpacker resort ->
Quiet mornings, the corrected hour
The retake's golden hour is early morning. Kings Park - Kaarta Koomba - is free and open around the clock, and free volunteer-guided walks leave daily at 10am and 1pm from outside Aspects of Kings Park; the free Blue CAT bus reaches it via Perth Station. In the Botanic Garden, the Lotterywest Federation Walkway carries you 620 m through the eucalypt canopy, and the Aspects shop sells WA-made design. So worth it! For onward legs, the accommodation across Western Australia pages helped me plan.

8.9Spinners Hostel - my quiet-morning address: adults-only, with a sun terrace, a garden and a coffee shop for slow starts, and film nights and themed dinners for the evenings. Air-conditioned rooms, a shared kitchen and private check-in and check-out keep the pace gentle. Take a look here ->
The retake, judged honestly
So, the retake: right position (the Arch), right hours (afternoon arrival, morning parks, evening shows), right questions to the desk. What went wrong the first time is fixed by planning the moment - prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
Perth rewards a second look; the second frame is always the keeper. Wander the malls, climb to the park, laugh until your cheeks ache at The Rechabite - and find your own favourites. If the city keeps calling after that, my heart holds the same soft spot for my Paris addresses. Go on - take the retake.
