A Guide to My Favourite Frames Near Manuka Oval

A Guide to My Favourite Frames Near Manuka Oval

Come with me around Manuka Oval in Griffith, Canberra: match-day landmarks, an Art Deco pool, old-and-new frames and airport-minded stays, all in my photo walk.

I have a soft spot for a neighbourhood that gives you more than one way to look at it. Back when I worked hotel night audit in Portland, guests would ask me after midnight how to make the next day feel less rushed; I learned that a good plan starts with one clear reason to be there. Here, mine is photographing Manuka as a living frame, not pretending an old image and today's view are identical.

The oval, kept in frame

Manuka Oval is the natural anchor for this walk: the district's historic sport oval, with cricket in summer and AFL in winter. I'd make it the fixed point in a then-and-now photograph, recording your position and direction so the comparison stays honest rather than claiming that every detail has stood still.

Manuka's mix of heritage and newer shops makes the immediate Griffith area worth lingering in; the oval and the nearby Art Deco Manuka Pool give you two distinct subjects to return to.

Match days and the inner south

For a sports-led visit, the calendar can shape the whole frame: Australia's men play England in a T20 at Manuka Oval on 2 December 2026; the Sydney Sixers meet Adelaide on 3 January 2027, and Australia's women face New Zealand in an ODI on 6 March. Cricket is the summer draw here, while AFL brings the winter-season contrast.

On match day, I'd photograph the oval as a place in use, then return to the same viewpoint when there's no fixture to see what changes.

About a 15-minute walk from Manuka Oval, Ramada By Wyndham Diplomat Canberra is my match-day favourite - close to Manuka and Kingston dining, with an outdoor pool, on-site restaurant and bar, free parking and free Wi-Fi. Its Griffith location also puts the Parliamentary Triangle about a 5-minute drive away. For an airport-friendly hotel base that keeps the oval in reach, I like this balance.

A quieter second frame

Manuka Pool is an Art Deco outdoor pool, a very different photographic subject from the oval and a good reason to slow the itinerary down. Pairing the two makes sense to me: one records the district's sporting life, the other adds a period design detail without needing to leave Manuka.

If you want to widen the comparison, Parliament House is about a 26-minute walk from Manuka shops; Old Parliament House and its rose gardens make a natural follow-on nearby.

About a 20-minute walk from Manuka Oval, Forrest Hotel & Apartments is my practical inner-south pick - its seasonal Sherwood Restaurant has outdoor dining in summer, and barbecue facilities add another easy option. Some rooms and apartments have kitchen facilities; free parking and an on-site restaurant round out the useful details. Canberra Airport is a 15-minute drive away. I'd choose this apartment hotel for a stay that keeps both the district and airport trip manageable.

The old and new parliamentary frames

For a longer photo outing, compare Old Parliament House, where the national Parliament sat from 1927 to 1988, with today's Parliament House on Capital Hill. The newer building is set into the hill beneath grassed roofs, with an 81-metre flagpole; the contrast makes a useful study in how the capital's public image has changed.

From Parliament House, Old Parliament House is about a 12-minute walk. I'd treat this as a separate half-day extension from Manuka rather than squeezing it into a quick oval visit.

About a 30-minute walk from Manuka Oval, Brassey Hotel suits the longer Parliament-and-history outing - it sits on 2.5 acres of gardens and lawns in Barton, with an on-site gym and spa. Lake Burley Griffin is a 10-minute walk away, and the National Gallery of Australia is a 20-minute walk away. I'd pick this Barton hotel ↗ when the national precinct is part of the plan.

A little farther, still well connected

One more comparison worth making is between the oval's local sporting history and the capital's national institutions: Manuka is the close-up, while Parliament House and the galleries give the trip a broader frame. Canberra's airport is also part of the practical picture, so I'd choose a base according to whether match-day walking or flight convenience matters more.

For other stays across Canberra, the Canberra hotel listings are a handy next look.

About a 30-minute walk from Manuka Oval, Little National Hotel Canberra is a considered base for pairing the oval with Parliament House and Old Parliament House, both 800 metres away. The hotel has a library and lounge, a bar, and bike hire; Canberra International Airport is 6 km away. I'd choose it when the trip has both a match and a national-precinct day in it. For the flight-first itinerary

If airport proximity matters more than walking to the oval, I'd make that trade deliberately: Manuka's sports and Art Deco details are still an easy planned outing, while the airport-side base keeps arrival and departure simple. My favourite part of this kind of photo walk is choosing one frame to return to, then letting the rest of the day unfold around it.

Wander back through Manuka, find the view you want to keep, and make it your own.

It has an on-site restaurant, fitness centre, tour desk and free Wi-Fi; rooms include a minibar and tea and coffee facilities.
