My Favourite Hotels Near Remarkables Park, Queenstown
A little black book of hotels near Remarkables Park Shopping Centre, Queenstown - cabins, atriums and fireplace resorts, plus the season that lights each one best.
Queenstown has the quality I love most in a place - everything reflects. The lake holds the mountains up to the light, the windows hold the lake, and somewhere between the two you lose an afternoon just looking. My partner and I came for the usual thrills and stayed for the surfaces.
So this is my little black book of the stays I trust, arranged by the hours and the seasons when each one shows off.
The materials this district is made of
Every district has a palette; this one reads like a jeweller's tray. Schist from the Shotover canyons, lake water doing its mirror trick, the Earnslaw's stubborn scarlet paint, Arrowtown's honeyed timber, iron at Kawarau - each surface wants its own hour, and most want their own season.
One road stitches it together: the bus from the airport runs past the Remarkables Park shops into town, and most of my picks sit along it. My partner and I aim for the calmer weeks either side of the peaks - the light is kinder then, too.
The surface that owns the morning
Water owns the morning here - the bay goes mirror-flat and holds every mountain at once, and it is worth leaving a hotel bed for! Walk the waterfront loop from Steamer Wharf around the Gardens peninsula; the 3 km circuit takes about an hour, past a rose garden you smell before you see.
Early is the whole trick: take the first KJet spin from the town pier, then let the crowds arrive while you already have your coffee in hand.
The surface that owns the evening
Glass takes over at dusk. Ride the gondola up in the late afternoon - in high summer the sun holds until after 9pm - and watch the town switch itself on from the new deck.
Zipline through the trees while the light lasts; the Ledge takes jumps until 8pm with the whole bay underneath. Then drop back down for dinner - or don't; the top keeps its own table.
A red funnel and the light it loves
Nothing here beats steam for drama. The Earnslaw has crossed Lake Wakatipu since 1912 - white hull, scarlet funnel - and you can stand at the rail while the stokers work the open engine room.
Time it for the evening sailing: quieter, and the light on the far shore is why photographers linger. Each year in late May and June she goes into the slipway, and a modern catamaran carries her trips.

7.9Moevenpick Queenstown - 15 km from the terminal, the far end of the bus line from the Remarkables Park shops, with the town centre just 2.5 km behind it. My atrium heart: dinner behind floor-to-ceiling glass, a lounge bar with a real fire, the Remarkables laid out beyond - ask the desk about parking when you book (resort hotel).
Stone, and where the jump began
Stone is the honest surface. The Shotover cuts schist canyons barely wide enough for a jet boat to pirouette in, and the first runs leave at 9:30am - go early, the hulls look best against raw rock. Back in town, dinner hides in an 1860s stone cowshed on Cow Lane; no bookings, arrive early and wait by the fire.
Out at the gorge, an old iron bridge carries the world's first commercial bungy - watching is free, and the crowd below is half the show.

7.9Oaks Queenstown Club Suites - 5 km from the airport, the shops' nearest pause in this book: four-star suites with a spa, sauna and terrace, made for the first evening off a late flight (rates ->).
Timber that turns gold every April
Arrowtown is the timber chapter, and April is its lighting cue. The gold-rush shopfronts on Buckingham Street go amber with the willows along the Arrow River, and the Autumn Festival fills the street with parades and market stalls; the museum asks NZ$14 if you want the whole story indoors. The Chinese miners' settlement on Bush Creek is free to wander, its main path gentle enough for wheels.
And then February comes back around - the New Zealand Open fills these same streets at Millbrook - so whichever season you chase, book early.

7.9Amity Serviced Apartments - 5 minutes' walk from the centre, and my apartment-week base for the golf February: self-contained one and two-bedroom pads with a balcony, serviced daily, with an airport shuttle on the facilities list - confirm that with the desk when you book (reviews ->).
Turquoise and pinot
The Kawarau runs a blue-green so bright it looks lit from inside! The same water that made the gorge famous flows through the Gibbston valley's pinot terraces, cellar doors strung along the highway.
Do it either way: a guided wine run leaves town at 10am most days, or hire bikes and follow the river trail between tastings. In town afterwards, The Winery pours itself - a card, a machine, New Zealand bottles from mid-afternoon. So worth the extra hour.
Weather as a developing agent
Weather is the developer here; every surface is just an undeclared negative. Winter frost paints the Remarkables, the ski fields open mid-June, Snow Fest throws its Polar Plunge in late May, and Matariki brings its own mid-winter long weekend. In November the marathon closes the roads.
Night flights have landed here since 2016, and Fergburger grills until 2:30am - the question my guests always asked me at the desk after midnight was never about the room, it was: will breakfast still be running when we land? Ask the desk exactly that. A kitchen that answers settles the whole trip.

8.5Voco Queenstown By Ihg - 6 km from the airport with a desk that never sleeps: garden or mountain views, a kitchen that cooks vegan and gluten-free, an outdoor fireplace for frosty nights. When someone asks me for hotels in Queenstown on short notice, this is the name I hand over.
Go wander
That's my drawer - six stays, each tied to its hour and its surface. Catch the bay flat at breakfast, the deck gold at dusk, the funnel red on the evening crossing, and the district will keep handing you more. Prices, hours and shuttles shift with the seasons, so check with your desk when you book.
If you'd rather browse before choosing, start from all accommodations in Queenstown or my own Queenstown accommodation shortlist - and if you ever want my Paris drawer, that one's written too. Happy wandering.
