My Favourite Places to Sleep Near Carriageworks
An invitation: my favourite beds near Carriageworks, Sydney, from Chippendale apartments to airport hotels, plus the working corners worth wandering.
I have always been drawn to the corners of a city that wake up before the rest of us do.
Eveleigh is one of those corners. I wrote this as a notebook of the people who work there, the manners that make a photograph welcome, and the beds I would book to be close to it all.
Who is working here, and when
Carriageworks sits in the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops, and the district still keeps working hours.
On Saturdays from 8am to 1pm the farmers market fills the sheds with growers and cooks.
Nearby, Redfern has long been the heart of Aboriginal Sydney, and Spice Alley in Chippendale keeps its kitchens going from 11am into the evening.
Further along the harbour, Sydney Fish Market trades from 7am to 4pm every day, with a wholesale auction early in the morning.
I love a district where you can tell the time by who is working.
Asking first: how permission works in this district
My rule from years behind a front desk: ask first, always.
At 3am I used to watch guests point their phones at night cleaners who had never agreed to be a postcard. I learned to step in with a quiet word.
A stallholder at the Carriageworks market is easy to ask. Buy something, say what the picture is for, and offer to show it. A no is a perfectly good answer!
Inside venues the house rules decide. The Art Gallery of NSW allows personal-use photos without flash, and the Sydney Opera House prohibits photos and recording during performances.
Wait for a pause in the work, never a moment of hurry.
The morning shift frames
The morning shift is my favourite hour to wander with a camera in one hand and a purse in the other.
Carriageworks Farmers Market - a Saturday-morning railway shed where the stallholders are happy to be asked.
Brickfields - a Chippendale bakery-café open from 7am on weekdays, so worth the queue.
Toby's Estate - a roastery café on City Road from 7:30am, where the coffee-making is half the show.
Sydney Fish Market - the working harbour at Blackwattle Bay, open from 7am, with behind-the-scenes auction tours you can book. So worth getting up for!
Bourke Street Bakery - sausage rolls and sourdough in Surry Hills, and a kind place to ask about a photo.

9.2The pick if you want to walk to the sheds, with Redfern station five minutes away and the University of Sydney six. Every apartment has a kitchen or kitchenette and the courtyard has an outdoor plunge pool, and the 24-hour front desk is a comfort after a late return, so this is my first answer to where to stay near Carriageworks. You trade the airport-side convenience for it.
The late shift frames
The late shift has its own light, and its own manners.
Mamak - roti canai made in the window in Haymarket, and the queues at peak times move faster than they look.
Spice Alley - hawker stalls round a lantern-hung lane in Chippendale, open until 10pm Thursday to Saturday.
Harry's Cafe de Wheels - the Woolloomooloo pie cart trading since 1945, with a Tiger pie to die for!
Capitol Theatre - Beetlejuice plays on 21 November 2026 at 7pm, and the ticket carries a lockout rule that shows how seriously the front-of-house crew take the curtain.
State Theatre - The Nutcracker is on Saturday 12 December 2026 at 2:30pm, a matinee for a gentler evening.

8.6The pick for a self-catering base between Broadway and Central: a ten-minute walk to Central, 6 km from the airport, with free bicycles for the ride to Eveleigh. The property keeps hours of 7am to 11pm, so ask about late arrivals. Its 64 apartments each have air conditioning and a seating area, and there is a small café on site (official site ↗).
The festival months
Some months the whole district turns to show-time.
Sydney Writers' Festival - each May at Carriageworks, with a good share of free events.
Sydney Contemporary - the art fair fills the sheds from 9 to 12 September 2027.
Sydney Festival - runs 7 to 25 January 2027, and Carriageworks is among its usual venues.
Seafood Marathon - Sydney Fish Market opens from 5am on 23 December to 5pm on 24 December, so check how it works at the new site.
Photograph the installers and caterers the way you would like to be photographed: with a question first.
Sleeping close to the working hours
Working hours do not follow the sun, so I sleep where the trains are.
Central is the hub. The airport train takes about 11 to 13 minutes to the International station, but the $18.61 adult station access fee sits outside the daily cap.
Look through Sydney hotels and apartments if you want other bases.

7.9The pick for catching trains: directly opposite Central, beside Prince Alfred Park, with Darling Harbour a 15-minute walk away. An airport shuttle is among its listed facilities, so confirm it with the desk at booking. You trade quiet for the bar and two-level beer garden downstairs, though the rooms have double-glazed windows and a veranda over the park (reviews ↗).
Beds for the early flight
The airport is about 8 km south of the centre, and take-offs and landings are barred from 11pm to 6am, so first flights are early.
What guests asked me most after midnight was the time of the first shuttle. One guest at 2am had not booked one, so ask the front desk, and confirm at booking.
Novotel Sydney International Airport and Stamford Plaza are my two airport picks.

8.1The pick for an early international flight: 1 km from the airport, with blackout curtains, a 24-hour front desk, 24-hour room service and an airport shuttle that you should confirm at booking. You give up the city for golf-course or airport views, and Wolli Creek station is a 15-minute walk away. It is a good airport hotel -> for a day sleeper.

8.4The pick for the domestic terminal: 3 minutes' drive from it and 10 from the international one, with soundproofed rooms and an outdoor pool. The 24-hour front desk can arrange transfers, and central Sydney is 15 minutes' drive away. You trade the walkable city for Botany Bay and airport views (Booking.com ↗).
The frames to leave with
Leave with the pictures people said yes to, and a few you only keep in your head.
Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
Wander Eveleigh, Chippendale and the fish market, and find your own favourites. There are more places to stay in Sydney if none of mine suit.
