My Favourite MCG Days in Melbourne

My Favourite MCG Days in Melbourne

I'm sharing the MCG, its Australian Sports Museum, match-day rituals and central Melbourne stays-then the small changes that make a better second visit.

I have a soft spot for Melbourne's sporting heart: it gives a day a lovely sense of occasion without asking you to plan every minute. Years behind a Portland hotel desk taught me that a good trip leaves room for a second try. I still travel that way.

A frame around the MCG

My first attempt at a sports-museum day would have been to rush straight to the headline display. I've learned-after years of hearing late-night guests ask what they should have done differently-that the better frame is the ground itself: take in the MCG's place in Melbourne's sporting life, then give the Australian Sports Museum time to add context.

The museum sits inside Gate 3 in Yarra Park. Its interactive galleries cover more than 95 sports, from Australian football and cricket to Olympic history, and the Test Tales exhibition traces 150 years of international Test cricket at the ground where it began.

Stories beyond the boundary

Make room for the museum's hands-on Game On area, with surfing, rock climbing and cycling activities, and for Warne: Treasures of a Legend, an exhibition of personal objects from Shane Warne's career, extended through March 2027. I'd put these between the broader galleries rather than treating the museum as a quick add-on to a stadium visit.

On a non-event day, the 75-minute MCG Tour is a lovely second frame: it can take you through the MCC Long Room, library, change rooms and along the boundary, subject to availability. Tour bookings are essential; the museum is inside Gate 3 too, so combining the two makes a satisfying visit.

About 1.0 km from the MCG, this CBD apartment hotel makes a handy base for the ground and the museum. I like the room to spread out: the one- and two-bedroom apartments have separate lounge areas and LCD TVs, and the hotel lists free WiFi and parking.

A greener second pass

After Gate 3, follow the city's parkland story rather than hurrying back indoors. Birrarung Marr links Federation Square with the sports precinct, and Fitzroy Gardens adds Cooks' Cottage and a conservatory among its attractions; they make a gentle counterpoint to the stadium's scale.

For a more reflective stop, the Shrine of Remembrance is close to the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Shrine's Galleries of Remembrance and Sanctuary give the visit real depth, while free guided tours run hourly from 10 am to 4 pm except at 1 pm. I'd leave time to take the place in quietly.

A central base for the walk back

From the MCG, the route back through Yarra Park and across William Barak Bridge gives the day a natural finish at Federation Square. If the match has emptied into the streets at once, I'd rather walk toward the city than join the first wave for the stations.

For another nearby outing, Melbourne Park is home to the Australian Open and hosts concerts through the year. In January, its arenas and outdoor courts make tennis a full-day plan; outside the tournament, the precinct still pairs well with a museum visit and a walk along the Yarra.

The fixtures that reward a return visit

The calendar is part of the MCG experience. The Boxing Day Test brings Australia and New Zealand to the ground from 26 December 2026, while the special 150th Anniversary Test against England is scheduled for 11-15 March 2027. The Australian Sports Museum's Test Tales display is especially fitting alongside either cricket occasion.

My honest caveat about a big event day: the atmosphere is the point, but crowds change the pace of a museum visit. I'd choose a quieter non-match day for the tour and galleries, then return for a match if that is the picture you came to make.

The retake, judged honestly

For me, the stronger version is not a tighter schedule; it's a clearer one. Start with the Australian Sports Museum, let its interactive displays and Test Tales set the context, then choose either the guided MCG Tour or a match-day return. Add the parklands when you want the city to slow down.

I'd happily make the MCG Tour my favourite pick, especially for anyone who wants the museum visit to feel connected to the place around it. Leave a little unscripted time after, wander back toward the city, and find your own favourite frame.
