A Guide to Noosa Heads, Frame by Frame

A Guide to Noosa Heads, Frame by Frame

My frame-by-frame little black book to Noosa Heads - dawn on Main Beach, Everglades mirror water, sunset on the river, and the four stays that catch it all.

Noosa Heads has a habit of rearranging your whole idea of a day. I think of mine there as a contact sheet - twelve frames from first light to the last glow on the river - and this little black book walks through them in order, with a place to sleep for whichever frames you refuse to miss.

What I love is how the day keeps offering new pictures: the headland at dawn, markets mid-morning, mirror-water afternoons, a sunset cruise to finish. Come wander my frames with me!

The Dawn Frames

My first frame is always Noosa Main Beach at first light - the north-facing curve, still half asleep, practically yours.

Then I take the Coastal Walk into Noosa National Park, out past Boiling Pot and Tea Tree Bay before the day warms; koalas are sometimes spotted along these tracks, and I refuse to leave without looking up!

The full Coastal Walk runs 10.8km return if you want the whole arc to Sunshine Beach - I'm content with the headland bays and an early turnaround.

Halse Lodge Noosa Heads - adults-only, a four-minute walk from the sand, a kitchenette and balcony in every room, and live music once the light goes; this lodge is my dawn-patrol pick, to die for!

Market Mornings

On Wednesday or Saturday mornings I point myself inland to the Eumundi Markets, Australia's premier market, running rain or shine - handcrafted homeware, ceramics, fashion and jewellery, every stall with a story.

A return bus transfer from Noosa makes the whole morning blissfully easy, and the ceramics get my money every time!

The Dead Hours and What Survives Them

Midday flattens the light and the beach along with it; these are my hours for shade, a long lunch and the compromise of a pool.

Down the coast at Mooloolaba, a 1.5-hour seafood lunch cruise through the river and canals - fresh Mooloolaba prawns, a licensed bar, booth seating - turns the dead hours into my quiet second-favourite frame.

Nomads Noosa - right in the thick of it opposite the shops, the restaurants and the cinema, with tropical gardens, a resort pool and a volleyball court for the flat hours, 800 metres from the beach and the National Park; this lively base keeps even the dead hours entertaining!

Afternoon on the Mirror Water

My favourite frame of the whole day, no contest: the afternoon cruise up the Noosa River into Australia's Everglades, where pure freshwater filters through tea tree into water so still it mirrors everything - the reflections are to die for!

Watch the colour change as the sun drops, glass of bubbles in hand; over 44% of Australia's bird species live out there, and the eco boats or a 5km canoe leg to Harry's Hut will take you deep into it.

The Evening Frames

Evenings belong to the water. From Noosa Marina the Noosa Queen sunset cruise glides past Makepeace Island and the North Shore ferry crossing out to Lake Cooroibah - bring binoculars for the kangaroos along the banks!

Prefer to chase dolphins rather than the sun? The marina's fast-boat safari runs out past the headlands to find the roughly 200 resident dolphins.

And for one last quiet frame, Laguna Lookout at the top of the National Park takes in the river mouth and Main Beach in a golden glow - sunset there is a must!

Raven6, Noosa Sound - a fireplace, a year-round pool and a hot tub waiting after the last light, a thirteen-minute walk from Main Beach; my pick for the final frame of the day ->

The Winter Frames

From June through November the humpbacks run the coast past Noosa - more than 30,000 of them in a season, many passing so close to shore that the Coastal Track lookouts at Dolphin Point and Hell's Gates do the job perfectly.

On the water I love Whalesongs Noosa from Gympie Terrace, the boat with an onboard researcher and a live hydrophone piping whale song straight to your phone - book it, it's magic! Noosa Ocean Adventures and the fast boats from Noosa Marina work the same waters.

The Calendar's Big Resets

Time the trip around what's on and the whole contact sheet changes. March brings the Noosa Festival of Surfing - longboarders and even wave-riding dogs take over the beach - June brings the Noosa Food & Wine Festival, July the ten-day arts celebration of Noosa Alive!, and the famous Noosa Triathlon sweeps through from late October into early November.

My own habit: I go the calmer weeks either side of the big ones, when the crowds thin and the prices ease.

Where to Sleep for the First and Last Frame

Here is my confession from the overnight desk: after midnight, guests never once asked me about checkout - what they asked, always, was how early they could get to the beach. Book for the frames, not the floorplan.

When I'm browsing beyond my picks, the full run of Noosa Heads hotels & apartments is where I start.

Witta Circle - Walk To Hastings St & Noosa Beach - six bedrooms, a private pool and the sand a seven-minute walk away; this holiday home is the one when the whole crew wants both the first and last frames.

The Contact Sheet, Annotated

Annotated, my sheet reads: dawn on Main Beach, the headland track before the heat, Eumundi when it's Wednesday or Saturday, shade and a pool through the dead hours, mirror water in the golden hour, sunset on the river, live music after dark.

Scribble your own notes in the margins - the frames you claim for yourself are always the best ones. And if Noosa Heads gets under your skin the way it got under mine, the Queensland hotels & apartments beyond it are waiting too.

Prices and availability shift with the seasons, so confirm when you book. Now go - first light won't wait for anyone!
