My Favourite Places to Sleep Near Melbourne Zoo
A warm, personal address book of where to sleep for a Melbourne Zoo day: Fitzroy apartments, an airport-side hotel and bayside bases across Melbourne.
I love a city best at its edges, the first coffee and the last tram, and Melbourne keeps both beautifully.
So here is my little address book for a Melbourne Zoo day, framed hour by hour, with the beds I'd choose for each frame.
The day's arc in Royal Park's light
I'm a former night auditor, so I read a city by its first and last hours, and Melbourne Zoo makes a lovely contact sheet of both!
The zoo sits in Royal Park, about 4 km north of the CBD, and it has been Australia's oldest zoo since 1862.
In mid-November the sun is up by about 6 am and sets near 8.10 pm, so the light gives you a very long frame.
Where you sleep decides which frames you can reach, and that is the whole point of this little guide.
The morning frames
The zoo opens at 9 am, 365 days a year, which leaves the early hours for coffee and a tram.
Tram 58 runs from William Street to the zoo in 16-18 minutes, with the first departure at 05:49 and a tram about every 10 minutes.
Royal Park station on the Upfield line is a short walk away, and the Metro Tunnel's Parkville station serves the university and hospitals close by.
Inside, I'd go straight to the gorilla rainforest, then the orangutans and tigers, then the Australian bush for kangaroos, koalas and platypus!
Adults pay from $58, and children aged 4-15 are free on weekends and Victorian school and public holidays, or $29 on weekdays.
The museum and market frames
My favourite second frame is Melbourne Museum, 2.7 km from the zoo, so I'd take a tram rather than the 42-minute walk.
Start in Bunjilaka, where Victorian Aboriginal stories are told in their own voices; it's so worth the time.
Next door is the Royal Exhibition Building, the first building in Australia on the World Heritage List, and Old Melbourne Gaol is about 12 minutes' walk on.
Queen Victoria Market is 2.6 km from the zoo, and it's closed on Mondays and Wednesdays by day.

9.3Tyrian Serviced Apartments Fitzroy (hotels in Fitzroy) - 0.9 km from Melbourne Museum, with a full kitchen, a balcony and free parking, so you trade the zoo's doorstep for a proper home base, and it's my favourite pick for a family zoo day!
The dead hours and what survives them
Midday is when the crowds are thickest, and I always told guests to treat it as an intermission.
On days above about 35 °C, sightsee early and spend the afternoon in air-conditioned galleries and museums.
State Library Victoria is free and open 10 am-6 pm, and trams inside the Free Tram Zone cost nothing.
Fares elsewhere are half price across Victoria until 1 January 2027, with a daily cap of $5.70.
If you'd like a wider choice than my five picks, browse all Melbourne hotels and apartments.
The early flight frame
The question guests asked me most after midnight was whether there was still a way into the city.
Melbourne Airport has no curfew, so flights land around the clock, and SkyBus runs from the airport until about 01:06.
The route 901 bus plus a train costs less, and there is still no train to the airport.
For late arrivals and dawn departures, I like a base with a desk that never closes.

8.7Hyatt Place Melbourne Essendon Fields - a 20-minute drive from the CBD, with a 2-minute walk to the city-bound tram and a 24-hour front desk, so you give up the zoo side for easy late arrivals; ask the desk to confirm the free airport transfer times when you book ->
The evening frames at the bay
When the zoo closes, I'd head for St Kilda, 25-30 minutes by tram from the centre.
Little penguins return to the breakwater at dusk, with free ticketed sessions released every Tuesday at 10 am for the following week, and no flash, please.
Courtney Barnett plays the Palais Theatre on Saturday 7 November 2026, doors at 7 pm!

7.4Crest On Park - St Kilda - 0.15 km from St Kilda Sea Baths, with free guest entry, so you swap the zoo's morning for pier and penguins, though check-in happens at its sister property, Crest on Barkly ↗
The evening frames in the Gardens
For a golden-hour frame, the Royal Botanic Gardens are open until 7.30 pm from October to March.
Open-air concerts run on Observatory Lawn from 20 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, including Wolf Alice on Saturday 5 December at 5 pm.
Jack Johnson plays the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on 17 November 2026, gates at 5.30 pm.
Melbourne Skydeck stays open until 10 pm from 2 November.

8.6District South Yarra - 3.4 km from the CBD, with a kitchen and seating area in every unit and a lift, so you trade the zoo's doorstep for Chapel Street and a short stroll to the apartments after the Gardens!
The long bright hours by the lake
Mid-December light lasts until about 8.40 pm, which suits Albert Park Lake, a sealed loop of about an hour on foot.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix runs 2-4 April 2027, and parts of the park close for weeks around it.
Hotel prices also jump around Melbourne Cup on 3 November 2026, so I book early for both.

7.7Clarion Apartments South Melbourne (Google Travel) - 2.8 km from Middle Park Beach, with a kitchen and balcony in every room and a 24-hour front desk, so you give up the zoo side for Albert Park's lake loop!
The big nights
Marvel Stadium in Docklands, inside the Free Tram Zone, hosts Robbie Williams on 11 November 2026 and Harry Styles on 27 November, both from 5 pm.
Guns N' Roses follow on 11 December, and BTS on 10 February 2027, with doors at 5 pm.
At Festival Hall, Joost Klein plays on 2 December and Beartooth on 28 January 2027.
On those nights I'd book a bed before I book the tickets.
The contact sheet, annotated
If I could keep only one frame, it would be the last tram home, still warm with the day.
Tram 58 leaves William Street until 00:17, and that is exactly what I'd confirm with whichever desk you choose.
