My Favourite Places to Stay Near Rod Laver Arena

My Favourite Places to Stay Near Rod Laver Arena

Where I'd stay near Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne: a warm little address book of markets, lanes and apartment hotels for early risers.

Some cities show off at noon. Melbourne, I think, is at its most charming when its hands are busy and nobody is performing for you.

This is my small, personal address book of where to watch that, and where to sleep close to it, around Rod Laver Arena.

Who Is Working Here, and When

I spent years watching a hotel wake up at 3am, so I always notice who is already working while everyone else sleeps.

Around Melbourne Park it is the stallholders under the market sheds, the cooks in the laneway kitchens and the crews who turn an arena into a concert hall by evening.

I'd rather show you those hands than another skyline, and I'll tell you how to ask before you lift a camera.

Asking First

My rule is simple: ask, smile, and show people the picture afterwards.

In the lanes, keep doorways clear and voices down early and late, and in Hosier Lane don't crowd residents' entrances.

Aboriginal sites and stories deserve the same care, so ask before photographing people and never climb on anything sacred.

Parliament House and NGV International both turn away tripods and selfie sticks, and the Shrine of Remembrance doesn't allow wedding photography, so pack light and read the signs.

The Morning Shift Frames

Queen Victoria Market - Thursday and Friday from 6am are the calm window, and the hot jam doughnuts are so worth it!

The market trades Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so skip Monday and Wednesday.

Degraves Street and Centre Place - weekday mornings before 9am, when the lanes are at their calmest.

Pellegrini's Espresso Bar - walk in, no bookings, and the old marble counter is a small delight.

Sleeping South of the River

Prahran Market - open early on its trading days and the most food-minded of Melbourne's markets, to my taste.

Tivoli Road Bakery - open from 7.30am, and the Botanic Gardens' gates open at the very same hour!

If these are your mornings, this is the side of the river I'd sleep on, a short train hop from Melbourne Park.

The Late Shift Frames

Sidney Myer Music Bowl - six minutes' walk from Melbourne Park, and Jack Johnson plays there on 17 November.

General-admission queues form before the gates open, so arrive early and be kind to the staff holding the line.

Melbourne Park - the Australian Open begins on 11 January 2027, and night sessions on Rod Laver Arena can run past midnight, so check the last trams.

Royal Botanic Gardens - Wolf Alice play on 5 December, standing room only and no chairs.

Sleeping Beside the Precinct

Swan Street - the pub strip that fills before and after a match, and I love it for exactly that.

Victoria Street - Little Saigon, the heart of the Vietnamese community that settled in Richmond from the late 1970s, for pho and banh mi.

Corner Hotel - live music from lunchtime, Tuesday to Sunday.

Guests always asked me after midnight whether their room would be quiet at five in the morning, so ask the desk when you book about early noise and which way your window faces.

Melbourne Museum - start at Bunjilaka, where Victorian Aboriginal stories are told in their own voices.

Trams 11, 86 and 96 bring you back to the city in about a quarter of an hour.

Sleeping by the Bay

St Kilda Pier - penguin viewing is free but ticketed, with tickets released on Tuesday mornings for the following week; no touching, feeding or flash photography.

Courtney Barnett plays the Palais Theatre on 7 November, and the rule there is no video, audio or professional photography unless the promoter says otherwise.

Monarch Cakes - Acland Street cake in the grand old tradition, and a sweet way to end a night.

One desk tip: key collection here happens at the sister property, Crest on Barkly, so ask when you book what hours that desk keeps.
